Overview
Wingspan, designed by Elizabeth Hargrave and published by Stonemaier Games, took the board gaming world by storm when it launched in 2019. It's an engine-building game where players attract birds to their wildlife preserves, each bird offering unique powers that chain together in increasingly satisfying combos.
What makes Wingspan special isn't just the mechanics — it's the presentation. The 170+ bird cards feature stunning original artwork, each with real-world facts about the species. The dice tower is shaped like a birdhouse. Even the egg tokens are chunky and satisfying to handle. It's a game that looks as good on the table as it plays.
How It Plays
Each round, you take turns performing one of four actions: play a bird, gain food, lay eggs, or draw cards. Birds are placed in one of three habitats on your player board, and each habitat corresponds to one of these actions. As you add more birds to a habitat, the action becomes more powerful — that's your engine building.
The genius is in the bird powers. Some trigger when you activate their row, others when opponents take certain actions, and some score bonus points at the end of the game. Finding synergies between birds is endlessly rewarding.
Who It's For
Wingspan hits a sweet spot that very few games manage. It's accessible enough for families and newcomers — the rules are straightforward and the theme is inviting — but there's enough strategic depth to keep experienced gamers engaged.
You'll love it if: you enjoy building combos, appreciate beautiful production quality, or want a game that non-gamers will actually want to play.
Look elsewhere if: you want direct conflict or high-stakes player interaction. Wingspan is largely a parallel experience — you're focused on your own board.
The Verdict
Wingspan deserves its reputation as one of the defining board games of the modern era. It's beautiful, satisfying, and endlessly replayable thanks to the huge variety of bird cards. The multiple expansions (European, Oceania, Asia) add even more variety without complicating the core experience.
